Pressure vessels have been round because round is the easiest shape to make strong. VESSEL holds working pressure in a flat, rectangular envelope — the first vessel shaped around the product, not the pressure.
Fit cylinders into a rectangular space — a chassis rail, a container, a cabinet — and room is lost twice: in the corners a round shape can never reach, and in the cages, cradles and clearances it needs. The flat vessel is the envelope. It mounts flush on a face, stacks with little wasted air, and carries one valve where a bank of cylinders carries a manifold.
The same flat architecture, skinned for its duty — carbon for weight, aramid for fire, aluminium for cost, colour for the fleet.
